TDL Electronics

Originally known as Transducer Developments Ltd., TDL was founded in the 1970s as a joint venture between IMF Electronics Ltd. - famous for its transmission line speaker systems, and Electro Acoustic Industries Ltd., - ELAC - one of the UK's leading commercial loudspeaker drive unit manufacturers.

During this period, one person - John Wright - had been mainly responsible for the direction and reputation for technical excellence of TDL. As a consequence Harman Motive arranged for the business to return to private ownership under John Wright as they no longer required hi-fi division.

TDL Electronics has concentrated on the design of affordable floorstanding loudspeakers employing a "reflex" version of the transmission line principle. These, together with smaller bookshelf and dedicated home cinema speakers have provided TDL with a complete range of competitive products.

Towards the end of the 1990s John Wright began to suffer from ill health and decided to sell his commercial interest in the business to Audacity Audio Limited, a company headed by Gordon Provan who had been in the audio industry for over twenty five years.

Following the acquisition by Audacity Audio, continuity of all aspects of the business was maintained including the retention of staff. International Sales being managed by Shelagh Devlin, and the benefit of John Wright's loudspeaker design and technical input, were also preserved.

In the Spring of 1999 the company extended the Nucleus range and launched new 'glass fibre technology' loudspeakers aimed at further improving TDL's market position.

The company continues to trade as TDL Electronics.
